Since we know we have a diverse mix of participants in the class, you have several options (pick one):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>(pages 1\u20133)<\/strong>\u00a0Crane &amp; Wardetzky, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/publications\/journals\/notices\/201710\/rnoti-p1153.pdf\">&#8220;A Glimpse into Discrete Differential Geometry&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis article discusses the &#8220;no free lunch&#8221; story about curvature we looked at in class, plus a broader overview of the field.<\/li>\n<li><strong>(pages 1\u20135)<\/strong>\u00a0Pottman et al, <a href=\"http:\/\/brickisland.net\/DDGFall2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DDGArchitecturalGeometry.pdf\">&#8220;Architectural Geometry&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis article discusses the beautiful tale of how discrete differential geometry is linked to modern approaches to computational design for architecture, as well as fabrication and &#8220;rationalization&#8221; of free-form designs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>(pages 5\u20139)<\/strong>\u00a0Bobenko &amp; Suris, <a href=\"http:\/\/brickisland.net\/DDGFall2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DDGConsistencyAsIntegrability.pdf\">&#8220;Discrete Differential Geometry: Consistency As Integrability&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis article provides another overview of discrete differential geometry, with an emphasis on\u00a0<em>nets<\/em> and their connection to the notion of <em>integrability<\/em> in geometry and physics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Though written for a broad audience, be warned that all of these articles are somewhat advanced\u2014the goal here is not to understand every little detail, but rather just get a high-level sense of what DDG is all about.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Assignment<\/span>: <\/strong>Pick one of the readings above, and\u00a0write 2\u20133 sentences summarizing what you read, plus at least one question about something you didn&#8217;t understand, or some thought\/idea that occurred to you while reading the article. \u00a0For this first assignment, we are also\u00a0<strong>very<\/strong> interested to know a little bit about <b>YOU!<\/b> E.g., why are you taking this course? \u00a0What&#8217;s your background? \u00a0What do you hope to get out of this course? \u00a0What are your biggest fears about the course? \u00a0Etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Handin instructions can be found in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&#8220;Readings&#8221;<\/span> section of the <a href=\"http:\/\/brickisland.net\/DDGSpring2024\/assignments\/\">Assignments<\/a> page. \u00a0<\/strong>Note that you must send your summary in no later than <strong>10am Eastern<\/strong> on the due date (<strong>January 25, 2024<\/strong>).\u00a0 For readings, there is no credit for late work.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your first reading assignment will be to read an overview article on Discrete Differential Geometry.
